Description
18th century pocket watch and case belonged to York, Maine cabinetmaker and engineer Major Samuel Sewall (1724-1814). The watch mechanism is of the key wound chain driven type with a gold outer case marked with an unidentified, English, probably London, hallmark. The gilded brass repousse case is decorated on its back with a scene of five people in Roman dress and is lined with maroon silk. Over the silk is inserted a lining paper with an equation of solar time table engraved "John Roulstone/clock/and Watch Maker Next/Door to the Lamb/Boston." John Roulstone advertised as being active in Boston in 1763.
