Description
The half-length figure of Nathaniel Barrell (1732-1831), gray haired and bespectacled, was made of him in 1816 when he was 84 years old.
Born in Boston, he was the son of John Barrell and Ruth Greene. In 1758 , he married Sally Sayward (1737-1805), daughter of Jonathan Sayward (1713-1797) of York.
Barrell was a merchant and farmer. He was a member of the Massachusetts convention that ratified the Constitution.
Jacques Moses Dupre Cole (1783-1849) painted the portrait, but did not sign it. It is one of three similar portraits of Barrell.
